Ecstatic DJ School

This DJ training program was designed specifically for conscious dance. Whether you aspire to become an Ecstatic Dance DJ or are a conscious dance facilitator wanting to deepen your set creation skills and learn DJ software in a dancer-centered way, this training meets you where you are.

This 9-module program is designed to build both skill and confidence. Taught by an international team of experienced Ecstatic Dance DJs and conscious dance teachers, the DTM DJ School is built for dancers, by dancers. You’ll move through a proven curriculum taught since 2019, blending musical intuition with practical technique.

You’ll learn methods for set creation, song curation, selection, and placement, along with library management systems that integrate smoothly with the systems and modalities you already use. The training also covers high-level transition skills drawn from professional DJ practice, supporting you to craft masterful, coherent dance journeys.

We offer both beginner and intermediate learning groups so you can progress at your own pace. All participants receive a comprehensive technical training manual with space for notes, making it a long-term resource you can return to as your practice evolves.

What It Means to Be a Conscious Dance DJ

A conscious dance DJ:

• Creates intentional musical journeys designed to support conscious dance practices

• Curates music with awareness of the emotional, intellectual, physical, and spiritual layers of human experience

• Understands that curation, selection, and track placement shape an overall soundscape, and values these aspects of a set as much as technical DJ skill

• Reads and responds to the energy of the dance without defaulting to comfort or constant “high vibes,” making space for the full spectrum of human emotion

• Supports inclusive and accessible dance spaces that cultivate a sense of belonging on the dancefloor

• Knows how to deliver multi-genre, multi-BPM sets maintaining coherence across tempo and stylistic shifts

• Can tolerate slower sections of music and silence, knowing they are as important as the “peaks”

• DJs in service to the dance they are playing for, while seeing themselves as part of the team and community, and following the guidelines and practices they are there to serve

This role requires emotional maturity, technical competence, musical sensitivity, and a deep understanding of dance as a practice.

Why This Training Is Different

We created a DJ school for dancers — taught entirely by dancers.. The Ecstatic DJ School was created at a time when there were no DJ schools specifically for conscious dance. While there are now many, none share our collective experience as Ecstatic Dance DJs and conscious dance professionals or our expertise in teaching through an embodied educational approach.

Most DJ education is rooted in club and festival culture, often genre-specific and performance-driven. While technically useful, these approaches rarely see dance as a practice. We honour the diversity of conscious dance modalities rather than teaching a single method or formula. We centre conscious dance–specific DJ skills: set architecture, multi-genre and multi-BPM journey design, transitions that support embodiment, and an understanding of how music shapes the group field.

Equally important, we intentionally cultivate a supportive, non-competitive learning environment. The DJ world has often been shaped by ego, gatekeeping, and exclusion — particularly for women. Our school is structured to counter this through a simple, step-by-step curriculum and a teaching team committed to kindness, responsiveness, and having a lot of fun together. Graduates consistently name the same difference: they feel supported, confident, and equipped — not just with skills, but with a grounded understanding of what it means to DJ in service to conscious dance communities.

What You’ll Learn

The DTM DJ School is a comprehensive, multi-module training that blends theory with hands-on practice. We offer breakout groups for beginners and intermediate DJs, so participants can learn at a level that meets them where they are. Topics include:

• Set creation systems and tools

• DJ software fundamentals (Traktor Pro) and controller basics

• Music library organisation and management

• Counting, phrasing, and determining the “energy” of tracks

• Foundational transition skills that all DJs need

• Cue points, EQing, filtering, and FX

• Tempo bending, harmonic mixing, and looping

• Track curation, selection, and placement

• Working with sound systems and technical set-ups

• Best practices for live DJ performance

• Pathways for stepping into DJing beyond the training

You’ll develop both technical confidence and creative fluency, whether you’re just starting out or refining your craft.

Stand-Alone Training or Part of a Pathway

The DTM DJ School can be taken as a stand-alone training for professional and creative development.
