FAQ
Q: What is conscious dance?
Conscious dance is a practice. It is dancing with awareness of yourself and of others. It welcomes the full spectrum of human emotion and invites curiosity through movement, supporting healthier ways of being. While conscious dance can happen anywhere, an environment intentionally created and facilitated for conscious dance deepens the experience.
Q: What is Ecstatic Dance?
An Ecstatic Dance is a conscious dance event. The name Ecstatic Dance is not trademarked or overseen by any single governing body. It is a term used worldwide to describe a free-form conscious dance practice. Ecstatic dances vary widely across the globe. Some are large, polished events with professional sound systems. Others are run by a collective of dedicated dancers in a small community hall. Some are facilitated by a professional conscious dance facilitator, while others have little or no guidance at all. The music may be delivered by a live DJ, or dancers may move to a curated playlist. The common thread that tends to unite these dances is the guideline that dancers are barefoot, sober, and refrain from talking while on the dance floor.
Q: Does Dance The Medicine teach Ecstatic Dance?
The Dance the Medicine team delivers embodiment education in the areas of facilitation, DJing, and community leadership. Our team consists of DJs, facilitators, and organizers of Ecstatic Dance events, as well as teachers from other conscious dance modalities such as 5Rhythms, Soul Motion, Open Floor, Trance Dance, and more. Many of our students have gone on to create conscious dance events, some of which they call “Ecstatic Dance,” and others under different names. We also have many students who come from other conscious dance modalities specifically to develop DJ and community-building skills. In addition, we attract wellness practitioners (therapists, breathworkers, yogis, etc.) who wish to include dance or movement in their existing offerings. We are a conscious dance school and community that values belonging over modality-based affiliation.
Q: I cannot afford the full tuition amount — what are my options?
Dance The Medicine is committed to making our trainings accessible to as many people as possible. You can apply for a scholarship or a work trade position to help cover tuition costs. We offer scholarships to support those in need and work trades for those who can contribute skills to the betterment of our organization. Click the button below to find out more about them and to apply.
Q: Do you offer work trade opportunities?
Yes, we offer a limited number of worktrade positions for all of our programs. These can be completed either before the program begins or during the in-person training itself. If you have a special skill you believe would be valuable to us, be sure to include that in your application. Click the button to go read more about the work trade and to apply.
Q: Are your trainings certified?
Graduation from our DJ, Facilitation, and Leadership Trainings results in a certificate of completion. Many students report that this has been sufficient to obtain insurance and to teach in venues that require certification, depending on local regulations. For those pursuing full professional certification as a DTM Certified Facilitator, the completion certificate counts toward the required education hours.
Q: Where are my course materials?
Your course materials are located on Thinkific.com in the Dance The Medicine online classroom. This is where you'll find all the recordings from your online courses. If you're attending the Facilitator Training in person, you’ll have pre-modules to view on Thinkific before the training begins. For those joining us for a live DJ training, you'll find your free self-led version of the course on Thinkific upon graduation.
Q: How long do I have access to my course material?
You have access to all of your course materials on Thinkific for one year from the day you first sign into the course.
Q: I'm not sure about online learning...is there extra support?
Yes! Our online courses are interactive and community-driven. You’ll get access to live calls, WhatsApp groups, and one-on-one support when needed. We’re known for being hands-on and responsive, even in the digital space. If you are still unsure, you are welcome to book an online consultation with Bernice to find out if it's right for you.
